Flood alleviation
Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire
In 2007 Moreton, along with many areas of the country, suffered devastating flooding. Since then the district has benefitted from a number of schemes to help withstand adverse weather.
Complete Utilities has just finished (Summer 2017) a comprehensive flood alleviation project which will help protect the area for many years. We worked alongside the Councils and the Environment Agency to ensure this scheme provided much needed flood protection, environmental protection, safety and value for money.
Gigaclear and Fastershire Partnership
The Cotswolds
The Fastershire pure fibre network is the first area in phase 2 rollout at the halfway stage. The network has been installed directly at more than 3000 homes and businesses using over 182 miles of future-proof fibre cable so far. Speeds of up to 1Gbps (1000Mbps), up to 30 times faster than the UK average, have been achieved.
Cllr Mark Hawthorne, leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said: "Fastershires partnership with Gigaclear is making superb progress in The Cotswolds. The rollout of ultrafast broadband is already bringing considerable benefits to residents and businesses and is well on target to complete by summer 2017".
The Fastershire / Gigaclear partnership has been in place since June 2016 with the rollout budget including 3m pounds from the Fastershire project and 7m pounds from Gigaclear. Complete Utilities are Gigaclear's primary contractor. We take great pride in our role in what it the first investment by a national fibre broadband project to be awarded to any other bidder than BT in the UK.
Joe Frost, Business Development Director at Gigaclear, said: "The pure fibre network is transforming rural communities, giving them the best broadband connection available. We are now on the home straight for completing the project on time and on budget and are looking forward to thousands more properties being connected by the end of 2017".
Gigaclear is one of the fastest and most reliable broadband networks delivered only to rural areas of England. With the experienced help of Complete Utilities, Gigaclear (working on a project called Fastershire) have been able to connect pure fibre broadband to this rural community.
Fastershire is a partnership between Gloucestershire County Council and Herefordshire Council to build a world class broadband network for the two counties. The first phase of the project, working with BT, has already provided fibre broadband to 43,188 homes and businesses in Gloucestershire, upgrading 193 cabinets in 40 exchange areas.
Project main points: -
- Highly sensitive area due to the nature of the building and its archaeological importance.
- High levels of general public and tourists visiting the Cathedral.
- Achieved 90% of new water main installation using trenchless technology (pipe bursting).
Our trenchless technology allowed us to reduced the amount of ground excavation required which resulted in less material sent to landfill and minimal disruption to the site and the surrounding Cathedral grounds. Our team worked side by side with the onsite archeologists to make certain the historic area remained undisturbed.
Traffic management was key to ensure work ran smoothly and consistantly. Compelte Utilities worked closely with local Highways Officers to ensure traffic disruption was kept to a minimum. An especailly difficult task given the amount of one-way streets.
Winchcombe Town Centre
Following completion of the project at Gloucester Cathedral the Complete Utilities water team focussed on a new scheme within Winchcombe Town Centre.
The residents were particularly concerned about the project after major disruption 2 years earlier when gas works took place. Before work began Complete Utilities attended a Town Hall meeting where we provided a clear plan of action. Our detailed street by street traffic management plan impressed the local residents and the project was given the green light.
The main installation was successfully implemented using 90% trenchless technology.
